Woodland Park Celebrates Gorilla Mom's First Mothers Day

Mother's Day Weekend is here and the Woodland Park Zoo is celebrating by recognizing one of their hardest working moms: Uzumma the gorilla.

SEATTLE, WA — Mother's Day Weekend is upon us and the Woodland Park Zoo is celebrating by recognizing one of their hardest working new moms: Uzumma the gorilla!

Uzumma gave birth to a healthy baby boy two months ago, and since then the zoo says she has been an excellent mother to her child.

The gorilla baby doesn't have a name just yet, but they say he's flourishing thanks to his mother's love and care. Every day he grows and gets a little stronger and more coordinated. Gorilla keepers also say he's more curious each day, and is excited to take in his surroundings as his mom takes him around the enclosure. He even is now growing his first baby teeth!

The baby is the first between 12-year-old Uzumma and her partner Kwame, who recently moved from the Smithsonian's National Zoo. The baby is the 14th gorilla to be born at Woodland Park, and the first since back in November 2015.

The zoo has set up a wish book for anyone who wants to follow Uzumma and the baby as they grow together, it can be found right here.
