As a retired teacher in Shoreline my class always recited the Pledge of Allegiance every morning. I was astounded early on that my sixth-graders couldn't define some of the basic words in the Pledge: pledge, allegiance, Republic, indivisible, liberty and justice. After that every student I taught learned the meaning of those words.
