Humans lived in the earth long before the invention of using timber construction for homes. Adobe designed homes are a real step up from cave dwelling to a very classy looking structure that provides comfort and beauty at low cost.
According to Cal-Earth, it is possible to build an 800 square foot home for $10,000 that will not burn and will not shake apart in an earthquake. The same low cost technology can be used for larger structures.
Architect Nader Kahilili was originally commissioned by NASA to build dome shaped adobe structures for use on a lunar colony. Then he had the bright idea that this design would also be useful right here on earth.

Part of Nader's vision was to be able to build low cost housing that would not burn in a forest fire or be vulnerable to earthquakes. The resulting design is incredibly strong and does not require heating and cooling.
Classes are available at Cal-Earth design. "Education and training are essential to Cal-Earth's training and vision. We believe that shelter is a basic human right and that every person should be able to build a home for him or herself. For those interested in learning to build with the earth, Cal-Earth offers intensive workshops throughout the year. Give us a few days of your time and we will teach you hands-on how to build your home, your school, or your community with the earth beneath your feet."

The resulting structure would only need enough electricity to provide for appliances, lighting and desired electronics. The mass of the building provides for comfort from cold winters and summer heat. What could be better?
