Fire At Fircrest In Shoreline May Have Started In Dryer

The laundry building at the Fircrest campus in Shoreline burned to the ground Thursday. The fire may have started in dryer.

SHORELINE, WA - The massive fire that destroyed the laundry facility at the state's Fircrest School may have started in a dryer. The two-alarm blaze began around 8:45 a.m. Thursday, and the Shoreline fire department reported that the fire was reported to them as a "dryer fire."

Firefighters from around the region - including Kirkland, Bothell, Seattle - responded to the fire, but the building was deemed a total loss even before the fire was completely out, according to the state Department of Social and Health Services, which operates Fircrest. The school is home to approximately 200 residents and 600 staff. No one was injured in the fire.

Gov. Jay Inslee toured the site on Friday afternoon. He used the destroyed building to draw attention to the Legislature's failure on Thursday to pass a capital construction budget after ending a third special legislative session.
