Lessons and Carols of Expectation at Church of the Redeemer

The Lessons and Carols of Expectation for Advent service with the Church of the Redeemer choir is at 5:00 pm on Saturday, December 7. Joining the choir is Christina Siemens, soprano, and Glenn Guhr, baritone.

Listen to readings and music about God coming to us. There will be no sermon or communion. Use this opportunity to experience and to think.

Lessons and Carols of Expectation for Advent will feature this music:

• “The Song of Zechariah” (Benedictus Dominus Deus),plainsong verses alternating with harmonized verses adapted from “Ecce quomodo moritur” by Jacob Handl
• “The Song of Mary” (Magnificat), in a setting by Nicholas Jackson, with a solo by Christina Siemens, soprano
• “Come Rejoice, Believers,” in a setting by Dietrich Buxtehude
• “Maria Walks Amid the Thorn,” in a setting by Hugo Distler

What is Advent?

Advent is a time of expectant waiting and preparation for the coming of Jesus Christ.

The Latin word adventus is a translation of the Greek word parousia. The word parousia in Christianity commonly refers to the Second Coming of Christ. Advent shares the longing for the first coming of the Messiah, with a call to be alert for the Second Coming.
