Mom Tried To Save Infant, 3-Year-Old From Burning Car On Camano Island

The two young girls died in the Tuesday accident. There's a donation page set up to help the family recover from the tragedy.

CAMANO ISLAND, WA - The mother of an infant and 3-year-old who died in a car crash here Tuesday tried to save her children as her minivan caught fire, according to reports.

The accident happened Tuesday morning along the 600 block of North Sunset Boulevard, Washington State Patrol Sgt. Mark Francis said, when 23-year-old Tanya Canell's minivan left the road due to weather conditions and crashed into a tree. Canell told police that she was stuck when the car crashed, but was able to free herself, and, with the assistance of a passersby, tried to free her daughters. One of people who tried to help was burned.

Canell was taken to Harborview Medical Center with severe injuries. According to a GoFundMe page set up to help the family recover, Canell suffered two broken legs, a broken pelvis, and burns over 30 percent of her body. A friend of the family established the donation page to raise $25,000 for the family - they were close to that goal as of noon on Wednesday.
