Shoreline Begins Sidewalk Upgrade Planning

SHORELINE, WA - Remember Shoreline's Proposition 1 from the November ballot? City officials are starting to plan how to build sidewalks with the money that Prop 1 will generate.

The City Council at the March 4 meeting will discuss a proposal to hire two new staff members to carry out the sidewalk prioritization plan. The Council will also look at two potential ordinances that would allow the city to issue bonds to pay for actual sidewalk construction.

With the passage of Proposition 1, voters approved a 0.2 percent sales tax increase for 20 years (a total sales tax rate of 10.2 percent). The proceeds from that tax increase will allow Shoreline to repay the bonds issued to pay for sidewalks.

The city is in very early planning stages. There's no timeline yet for when sidewalks will be completed, but officials hope to do about two projects per year. Since Shoreline incorporated in 1995, the city has only built about 22 miles of sidewalk, but there are about 191 miles of street in the city.
