Shorewood Girls Tennis in Striking Distance of First Place

Shorewood defeats rival Shorecrest and moves within a half-game of first place in the WesCo conference.

The Shorewood girls tennis team was slowed early in the season by a case of the flu that knocked a number of its top players out of competition.

Now, with a healthy and complete roster, the Thunderbirds look to be hitting their stride.

Shorewood defeated Shorecrest 5-2 on Friday to move within a half-game of first place Everett in the WesCo 3A conference.

Shorecrest entered the match undefeated in league play, but the T-birds continued a recent trend of dominating the singles matches, sweeping the Scots en route to improving to 4-1 in the conference.

Mackenzie Bang paced the T-birds, beating Meera Limaya 6-2, 6-2. Limaya and Bang were both undefeated on the season entering the match.

Francesca O'Malley also picked up a win in singles competition, getting past Thea Henderson of Shorecrest 6-1, 6-3. Daniella Brengelmann defeated Izzy Brandstetter 6-0, 6-2 and Sarah Oh posted a perfect score of 6-0, 6-0 over Erica Pan.

Clara Lam and freshman YuAnne Corbett won their doubles match 6-3, 6-4 to finish off the victory.

Shorecrest faces off next against Meadowdale on Tuesday.
