SWEL Timebank to Launch in November

The Shoreline, Woodway, Edmonds and Lake Forest Park Timebank is set to launch Nov. 9, with a community potluck and orientation.

On Wednesday, Nov. 9, the Shoreline, Woodway, Edmonds and Lake Forest Park (SWEL) Timebank will launch with a community potluck and orientation at the Shoreline Library.

Timebanking helps build communities and revitalize neighborhoods through an exchange of services and time, rather than money.

“Everyone has something to give and something they’re passionate about,” said SWEL coordinator Judy Kinney. “People will get to exchange their resources and services without money ever being a barrier.”

A simple, Internet-based Web site allows members to list what they would like to do for other members and which services they would like to receive.

With all services being valued equally, SWEL members can earn Time Hours after each service they perform, which can then be redeemed for services from other members.

Hours that are earned may also be donated to local charities.

The SWEL Timebank, which took root over a year ago during a community gathering hosted by Aging Your Way, a non-profit senior service, will be one of over 100 active timebanks in the United States. SWEL follows Eastside Timebank, in East King County, which serves the cities of Kirkland, Redmond and Bellevue.

There is a small one-time fee to join, with discounts for students, senior citizens and low-income individuals.

“Everyone has a talent,” said Kinney. “Whether it’s cooking or walking a dog or gardening, the Timebank allows people to contribute to their community by doing what they love.”

For more information, or to register for timebanking, visit the SWEL Timebank website or contact the SWEL Timebank coordinator.
