VIDEO: Goats Entertain Crowd, Munch Down Blackberrry Bushes

Nearly 250 goats brought into Horizon View Park in LFP eat bushes and won the hearts of citizens

Light sprinkles of rain couldn't keep 250 goats from the endless buffet of blackberry bushes at Horizon View Park  in Lake Forest Park.

The domestic goat (Capra aegagrus hircus) hails from the feral goat of Southwest Asia and Eastern Europe.  Part of the Bovidae family, goats are kin to sheep.  There are over 300 breeds of goat.  Throughout history, goats have helped human as a source of food and clothing.  More recently, goats have become popular as pets.

Men, women and children who flocked to Horizon View, Saturday, marveled at how the goats conquered the steep slopes and uneven terrain to enjoy the lush lunch of greens.  These agile, four-hooved animals were not shy or scared of the dense blackberry thorns.  The goats traveled to Lake Forest Park from eastern Washington, the city of Edwall to be specific.  They are a good tool for natural vegetation and weed control.

The "all you can eat" banquet of thick, blackberry foliage could take up to four to five days and require human volunteers to pull up the roots to finally kill off the bushes.
