Why Most Business Owners Are In Trouble

I keep having this conversation with people, and I know that I've already written about this, but I have to write about it again because it'

Over and over I see business owners who think that an office manager can also be the bookkeeper. I also see business owners paying bookkeeper/office managers $15 an hour. This is insane when the going rate for a bookkeeper is a minimum $65 an hour. What this tells me is that these business owners don’t understand the importance of the bookkeeper any more than they understand the importance of letting a surgeon perform surgery.

Your bookkeeper is not going to make sure your business survives, unless they are a very special kind of bookkeeper.

I am not going to say that there are no $15/hour office managers out there who couldn’t also tell you whether or not your business is doing okay, but what I am saying is that you are not going to find somebody with 15 or 20 or 30 years of experience managing the finances of successful companies for the same rate that you could find somebody willing to work as an administrative assistant, unless you are extremely fortunate.

Most business owners who hire a bookkeeper think that because they have a bookkeeper, they no longer have to pay attention to the financial health of their business. Nothing could be further from the truth. A good bookkeeper will set up your systems in such a way that you can tell at a glance how your business is doing, a good bookkeeper will make sure that you know how healthy your businesses at all times.

I just had a conversation with somebody who I’m helping Woare how do I explain that the business is in trouble. Now there’s no question that this owner already knew the business was in trouble, but what to do about it was unclear. Now we know. Now we can do something about it. Before it’s too late.

Don’t let it be too late for you. bookkeeping is the only place in your business where you can have absolute precision and predictability. If you don’t invest in making sure that your finances and your bookkeeping are tight, I can pretty much tell you how the rest of your business is going to look.

So I’ll say it again, as I keep doing, over and over, make sure the person running the finances of your business is qualified to do that job.
