You Don't Know How Much You're Making?

It’s a common problem. Most people don’t know how much they’re making. If you’re an employee on a fixed salary, or a set number of hours and I fixed hourly rate, but you know how much you make. But we’re not talking about employees, we’re talking about business owners.

in nearly every business I handle the books for, it started out that the owner didn’t really know how much money they’re making. They have some idea of how many thousands there depositing in the bank each month, and they have some idea what their expenses are, but being able to decisively say this is my monthly gross, is a challenge. What’s an even greater challenge is being able to say what your monthly net profit is.

Bookkeeping is not actually that complicated. We’re simply talking about recording what occurs. It’s like taking notes in a meeting. The better the notes, The more effective the meeting will be going forward. It’s safe to say that no matter how good the notes are that you take in a meeting, that doesn’t necessarily change the meeting itself. Because the notes are about what occurred in the past right?

By the same token bookkeeping is recording the past. This is where professional bookkeeping starts to make sense. A professional bookkeeper will take those notes, those reports from QuickBooks, and will use them to help you know what to do next. Unless that is occurring, good record keeping really doesn’t help you.

you have to admit, if I tell you you made $4000 last month, but your bank account is empty, I haven’t really help too much. But if I tell you that your cost per acquisition, the amount it cost you to get a new client, is $2000, and your average sale for that client is 1900, then it should be painfully obvious to you that there something wrong.
