📰 News we're reading

1. City Issues First Rebuild Permit Following Spokane Complex Fire (spokanecity.org) — Spokane's Development Services Center has issued its first rebuild permit after the Spokane Complex Fires and laid out a clear, four-step process for residents to reconstruct their homes. From hazardous material removal and asbestos surveys to reduced-fee demolition permits and reuse of existing plans, city staff are offering streamlined help by phone and email to get fire-impacted families rebuilding quickly.

2. Judge hears arguments over who can be held liable in Joshua Musselman's shooting death (krem.com) — A Spokane judge is weighing which agencies can be sued over the 2024 police shooting death of Joshua Musselman, with the city of Spokane, Spokane County, DOC and Frontier Behavioral Health among those named. Attorneys debated whether there's enough evidence to hold each party liable, focusing on Musselman's mental health history and officers' use of lethal force. The judge has not yet ruled, and trial is tentatively set for July 2027.

3. 'We weren't alone:' Spokane Latter-day Saints find faith, blessings in wildfire ashes (deseret.com) — Latter-day Saints in Spokane who lost homes in this month's wildfires gathered for a special multi-stake meeting where President Dieter F. Uchtdorf and Elder Neil L. Andersen offered comfort and counsel. Members most affected sat near the pulpit, including a Seven Mile Ward member who lost her home. The brief report points readers to Church News for full coverage.

4. Missing and found: What happened to L.M. Ringer's grave? (spokesman.com) — A pioneer of the Inland Northwest, L.M. Ringer, was finally given a properly marked grave in Spokane after descendants spent years tracking down his burial site. Family members traveled from Yakima to Greenwood Memorial Terraces to correct the headstone's placement. Their research confirmed Ringer had been moved from Pullman to rest beside his wife and relatives.

5. In Fire-Ravaged Spokane, a Public Middle School Focused on Building Community Stands Strong (architecturalrecord.com) — Pauline Flett Middle School in northwest Spokane has become a stabilizing hub for students returning less than a month after wildfires scorched nearby neighborhoods.
