At the same time, state ecology officials are pressuring Spokane International Airport, the city, and county over delayed PFAS cleanup, and wildfire smoke continues to blanket the area, compounding health and recovery concerns.
   

2. Steps to begin rebuilding homes after Spokane Complex Fires (krem.com) — If your Spokane home was damaged in the Spokane Complex fires, the city has started issuing rebuild permits and temporarily cutting some fees to speed your recovery. Officials outline step-by-step requirements, from EPA hazardous waste cleanup and asbestos surveys to demolition permits and reconstruction plans, with local contacts and phone numbers to guide you through each stage.
   

3. Airbnb extends free stays to WA wildfire survivors (seattletimes.com) — Spokane residents displaced by this summer's catastrophic wildfires can now access free short‑term housing through Airbnb.org, alongside local shelters at the Convention Center, County Fairgrounds and YMCA branches. The city also received $1 million in state wildfire housing aid, managed by Goodwill, while Washington 211 is screening callers from mandatory evacuation zones for eligibility.
   

4. Spokane chest surgeon, med student work to promote early lung cancer testing (spokanepublicradio.org) — Spokane thoracic surgeon Dr. Alexi Matousek and UW med student Christian Held are using a new ION robotic bronchoscopy system at Sacred Heart to biopsy tiny lung nodules much earlier and more safely. They hope better local data and outreach will convince more Spokane-area smokers to get annual CT scans, catching lung cancers at highly curable stages with minimally invasive surgery and short hospital stays.
   

5. Spokane students learn about photography from NatGeo (spokanepublicradio.org) — Spokane students from refugee and immigrant families spent three days learning storytelling-focused photography from National Geographic professionals on the Whitworth campus and around the city. Using loaned cameras, they practiced at downtown Spokane, Hoopfest, the river, and Mount Spokane, then shared their work in a community showcase and ongoing NatGeo archive.
