📰 News we're reading

1. "Ashes within ashes": Nonprofit group recovers cremains for Spokane wildfire survivors (spokanepublicradio.org) — Spokane residents who lost their homes in the recent wildfires are getting help from volunteer archaeologists who carefully recover loved ones' cremated remains from the ashes. One North Spokane couple watched as specialists and a cadaver dog located their mother's cremains, offering a rare moment of closure and comfort amid the devastation. The nonprofit provides this detailed, painstaking service at no cost to survivors.

2. Free 'yard sale' connects Spokane wildfire survivors with neighbors who want to help (krem.com) — Spokane-area wildfire survivors can now get free household items through FarmToYou's new Neighbor to Neighbor program, which works like a no-cost, area-wide yard sale. Residents with goods to spare and those who lost homes sign up online, then connect directly using private QR codes. The effort runs through September 20, giving locals multiple weeks to give or receive help safely.

3. Spokane firefighter Liam Riley awarded Medal of Valor for rescue (929zzu.com) — A Spokane firefighter has been honored with the Spokane Fire Department's Medal of Valor for rescuing an elderly man from a burning South Sherman Street apartment. Working in heavy smoke and intense heat, he chose a faster escape route through a window to get the victim to waiting crews. The swift rescue was completed within minutes of the initial call.

4. Spokane Indians drop fourth out of five games this week; Everett wins 6-4 (spokesman.com) — Spokane baseball fans saw the Indians drop another close one Saturday, falling 6-4 to the Everett AquaSox at Avista Stadium despite home runs from Ethan Hedges and Derek Bernard. Everett's steady solo shots kept Spokane chasing all night, and the loss marked the Indians' fourth defeat in five games as they head into Sunday's season finale.
