1. Truck crashes into Spokane Housing Authority building, forcing staff to work remotely (kxly920.com) — A truck slammed into the Spokane Housing Authority's north central office, causing major exterior damage and sending one custodian to the hospital with minor injuries, so staff are working remotely while a temporary wall is built. Spokane residents who rely on the agency's services should call the office number for help until employees can safely return, which is expected as early as Monday.
2. Gonzaga places in top 90 National Universities in new U.S. News rankings (krem.com) — Gonzaga University in Spokane has climbed to No. 90 in U.S. News & World Report's 2027 National Universities rankings, placing it in the top fifth of schools nationwide. Leaders highlight Gonzaga's Jesuit mission, hands-on learning, and strong business and entrepreneurship programs as key drivers of the recognition.
3. Spokane man receives national award for translating during area fires (kxly920.com) — A Spokane volunteer, Elysee Kazadi, is being honored nationally for translating for evacuees during recent area wildfires, after choosing to help at Red Cross shelters instead of checking his own home. Using his fluency in Swahili, he worked overnight shifts at Spokane Falls Community College and the Spokane Convention Center, and can now direct up to $50,000 in grant money to a charity he chooses.
4. New Hires & Promotions: Sept. 24 (spokanejournal.com) — Several Spokane design and architecture firms are adding new leaders and staff, while local banks and real estate companies across the region announce key promotions and hires. A Spokane community organizer has been named Community Connector of the Year, a Whitworth professor earned a Fulbright award, and The Podium Powered by STCU was recognized nationally as a top volleyball venue.
5. Everett FD receives unexpected thank you after battling Spokane wildfires (everettpost.com) — A Spokane resident drove to Everett to personally thank firefighters who helped battle the Old Trails Fire near Spokane in August, gifting them custom leather radio straps. His gesture underscores how Spokane residents are still processing this summer's wildfires and appreciating outside help, while the equipment will continue supporting future wildfire responses across Washington.
