📰 News we're reading

1. Starbucks confirms at least one Spokane location is closing amid nationwide cuts (krem.com) — A Starbucks at 2401 W Wellesley Ave. in Spokane's Shadle Shopping Center is closing this weekend, with Saturday set as its final day of business. The company says it will try to transfer employees to other local stores or offer severance, and has not yet confirmed whether any additional Spokane locations will shut down.

2. Spokane County weighs delay to planning policy changes amid local control issues (everettpost.com) — Spokane County leaders are considering delaying countywide planning policy changes that could shape how Spokane and nearby cities handle growth, housing targets, and urban growth boundaries. Officials want more time to finish 2026 comprehensive plan updates, weigh housing affordability strategies, and review infrastructure capacity before making decisions that may affect zoning, development options, and where new homes can be built.

3. Most Spokane County overdose deaths involve housed people, new health district data shows (kxly920.com) — New data from the Spokane Regional Health District shows that about two-thirds of recent overdose deaths in Spokane County involve housed residents, challenging assumptions that the crisis is mainly among unhoused people. Officials report suspected declines in overdoses this year, crediting awareness and naloxone use, and have expanded an online dashboard so locals can see trends and hotspots across the county.

4. Longtime Spokane County elected officials honored at annual county address (spokesman.com) — Spokane County residents are seeing a generational shift in local leadership as longtime Auditor Vicky Dalton, Commissioner Mary Brooks, and Superior Court Judge Annette Plese are honored for decades of public service and prepare to retire. At a packed State of the County luncheon in downtown Spokane, colleagues praised their collaborative style, election oversight, and courtroom work that have shaped county government for nearly 40 years.

5. Our Stories: HerStory (khq.com) — A community storytelling event today with YWCA Spokane and the Northwest Museum of Arts & Culture invites residents to honor women who shaped Spokane and survivors of domestic violence. Timed with the start of Domestic Violence Action Month, it highlights the area's high domestic violence rates and offers interactive art, music, and history activities for families to learn, reflect, and connect.
