📰 News we're reading

• City to provide asbestos testing, host community resource meetings (spokanecity.org) — Spokane residents affected by the Old Trails Fire can soon get free asbestos surveys, with the city covering testing costs where insurance falls short, pending council approval on October 14. Homeowners can request new tests or reimbursement up to $1,600 and attend resource meetings October 13 and 28 at local middle schools. City staff and partners will guide families through rebuilding, housing assistance, and contractor questions.

• Community plants 2,000 trees to restore Little Spokane River (kxly920.com) — Hundreds of Spokane-area volunteers just planted 2,000 trees along the Little Spokane River at Waikiki Nature Preserve, kicking off a multi-year restoration project. Organizers say the new vegetation will improve water quality, stabilize eroding banks, and even help buffer future wildfires. Another planting day is already set for next weekend, inviting more locals to pitch in.

• Rookie Luca Jarvis scores first WHL goal, Spokane Chiefs hold off Everett 3-2 (thenewstribune.com) — Spokane hockey fans just watched rookie Luca Jarvis net his first WHL goal as the Chiefs edged Everett 3-2, bouncing back from a streak-snapping loss. Goalie Carter Esler stopped 32 shots to secure the win. The same two teams return to Numerica Veterans Arena on Tuesday, giving local fans another quick chance to see this promising start continue.
