Here are the top stories today in Spokane:
- The Spokane City Council approved another round of funding Monday for upgrades and repairs at the city-owned emergency homeless shelter on Cannon Street this week, this time for up to $250,000. The city has now invested at least $1.9 million for the building, which can sleep about 80 people overnight, since signing a 60-day lease with an option to purchase for $395,000 in 2019. It was a decision made partly in fear, as cold weather settled into Spokane and advocates for the homeless warned that many people would be left to freeze on the street without more shelter beds. While the facility has indeed served its purpose, the building may have been in need of a few more repairs than officials were initially aware. (The Spokesman-Review)
- Christmas came early to a handful of lucky kids in Spokane. Through its "Christmas Wheels" program, the Spokane Police Department gave away 26 bikes to local families in need. The department wishes to make the program even bigger next year, with aims of putting on training for kids and allowing them to ride with police officers. Anyone interested in donating to the cause is encouraged to contact the Spokane Police Chaplaincy Program. (KXLY Spokane)
- Spokane Police have found no evidence a murder victim participated in sex trafficking his girlfriend. The suspect told police he killed the victim last year after learning he sold his daughter into a sex-trafficking organization in the Seattle area. (KREM.com)
- An SUV hit a man, then dragged him two blocks in a collision on North Perry Street and East Ermina Avenue. (KXLY Spokane)
- If you haven't already picked out a Christmas tree, you'll want to do it sooner rather than later: many Spokane tree farms are closing early this season due to ongoing shortages. (KREM.com)
