Here are the top stories in Spokane today:

  1. A $550,000 Justice For Families grant will help establish a new court in Spokane that focuses on domestic violence. The YWCA Spokane and Spokane Regional Domestic Violence Coalition (SRDVC) has announced that they received a grant from the United States Department of Justice Office on Violence Against Women this October. The Justice For Families grant will allow YWCA Spokane, SRDVC, and the Spokane Superior Court to address domestic violence issues in a specialized court setting. This will include an alternative judicial process as well as trained legal advocates who provide trauma-informed support to victims. (FOX 28 Spokane)
  2. Spokane needs more homes, but the pandemic's still putting a pinch on the housing market. Builders want to complete more homes, but piles of paperwork are delaying the process. Before COVID, Jim Warner, who owns Solid Structures, says he could push permits through in about two weeks. Now, he could wait up to 16 weeks before he breaks ground. This complicates the process because he can't hire contractors or plan projects in general. It also means the final product will cost more for buyers because the projects are taking longer to finish. (KXLY Spokane)
  3. Spokane chef Ricky Webster, along with two other team members, won the Halloween-themed baking competition show "Snoop and Martha's Very Tasty Halloween," on Thursday, Oct. 21. (KREM.com)
  4. The strongest storm system seen so far this fall could be very strong across the western U.S. as a low pressure area rapidly intensifies into what's known as a "Bomb Cyclone," but Spokane will be pretty sheltered from the heaviest precipitation. (KREM.com)
  5. Enjoy the outdoors inside at the Liberty Gallery from Nov. 5 through Dec. 26. "The Great Outdoors" celebrates the splendor of Eastern Washington's many outdoor vistas. (KHQ Right Now)
