Here are the top stories today in Spokane:

  1. The amount of COVID-19 cases in the Spokane County school district hit a record high on Friday. Spokane public schools reported 539 positive tests on its weekly COVID-19 dashboard, a significant increase from last week's 58 confirmed cases. 29% of public school students were absent on Friday. The school announced that schools would close on Tuesday, hoping the four-day weekend will help staff and students recover. (The Spokesman-Review)
  2. A 40-year-old man was arrested and charged with vehicular manslaughter after officials said he fatally struck a woman crossing the road on Saturday night. The woman was crossing Sprague Street when she was struck by a van. She was immediately taken to the hospital and pronounced dead. (KHQ Right Now)
  3. On Friday, Spokane County convened the Council of Governments at CenterPlace Regional Event Center to discuss how to spend the $208 million the region was granted from the American Rescue Plan. The two biggest issues discussed were affordable housing and infrastructure. Additionally, the city would like to dedicate millions towards improving its sewer and water systems (The Spokesman Review)
