Here are the top three stories today in Spokane:
- Curbside yard waste pickup service is returning to the Spokane area on Feb. 28. The service uses 96-gallon green carts to remove yard waste, food scraps, and paper items for Spokane residences. The program runs from March through November with the green carts being picked up alongside garbage cans. (KXLY Spokane)
- The City of Spokane has announced upgrades to parking meters that will upgrade city parking to the modern era. The new plans will add license plate recognition, a digital parking permit system, multiple payment options, and solar panels to the meters in an effort to improve efficiency. According to the city, installations of the new meters are set to occur by the end of March, and the technology should go live between April and June. (KXLY Spokane)
- Yesterday morning was a busy one for the Spokane Police Department, as dayshift officers responded to two separate incidents resulting in multiple recovered stolen vehicles, multiple arrests, and a firearm recovery. The first incident occurred on the city's south side and led to the arrest of 24-year-old Mohammed Jalhoom for theft of a motor vehicle, eluding, robbery, three counts of hit and run, on top of several outstanding warrants. The second incident involved a stolen commercial truck by a former employee. 47-year-old Nathaniel Brant was arrested for taking a motor vehicle without permission, and a shotgun was recovered from the truck.
