Here are the top three stories in Spokane today:

  1. A Spokane Goodwill was evacuated and under investigation after a suspicious item was found in a donations box. The scene has since been deemed all clear and employees have returned to the building. Employees of the Goodwill on N. Ash St. previously believed an explosive was found in a donations box; however, the item was found to be a novelty replica and not an explosive. (KHQ Right Now)
  2. A stabbing near a gas station in North Spokane left two people injured on Sunday night. The incident occurred in the area of North Monroe Street and West Frederick Avenue when two women got into an argument. The two women's boyfriends got involved as the argument escalated, which eventually lead to the stabbing. The man and woman injured in the stabbing were taken to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, and the suspects have not been located at this time. (KREM.com)
  3. No injuries were reported after an apartment caught fire on Monday morning in Spokane Valley. A passerby noticed smoke coming out of a door and window from a first-floor apartment in the 13100 block of East Valley way. All adjoining apartments were evacuated while Spokane Valley Fire Department (SVFD) knocked down the fire, and the cause is now under investigation. (KHQ Right Now)

Doing a "Dry January" or just looking for a flavorful alternative to regular cocktails? Here's a suggestion: try a non-alcoholic drink from our partners at Betera. Created by an award-winning chef from natural botanicals, Betera's drinks come in 3 flavors — Ginger-Orange, Elderflower-Lime and Rhubarb-Hibiscus. We tried Ginger-Orange, and it was excellent — lightly effervescent, floral with a hint of bitterness and the sippability of a cocktail.

Betera is offering readers of the Daily a 15% discount on their first order: use PATCH15 at checkout. Highly recommended — you can try Betera here.

  • Students at Sacajawea Middle School on Friday brainstormed ways they could honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. by serving others over the long weekend. Ideas included making fleece blankets to donate to SCRAPS, assisting their families with various tasks, volunteering at a women's shelter, and more. (Facebook)
  • To honor Betty White's 100th birthday on Jan. 17, SpokAnimal C.A.R.E. joined the viral #BettyWhiteChallenge to raise money for homeless pets. (Facebook)
