Here are the top three stories in Spokane today:
- Last week, Spokane Police Chief Craig Meidl reported property crimes have increased by about 10 percent since new police reform laws went into effect last summer. "If we are not given back those tools and officers are not able to be proactive the same measure that they were, you're going to continue to see these elevated numbers," Meidl said at a press conference. Breean Beggs, President of the City Council, disagrees with Meidl's conclusion, noting that the data sample is "way too small" for this conclusion. (The Spokesman-Review)
- Startup Spokane and Spokane Public Library are joining together to present the JumpStart event series aimed at helping local entrepreneurs. Tips, tricks, and stories will be shared with those who attend the event series. The first event will take place at the Greater Spokane Inc. conference room on Mar. 9 with registration currently open. (KXLY Spokane)
- The Spokane City Council is reviewing how to spend the second round of funds from the American Rescue Plan Act. The $12.1 million spend will be outlined by the council in a plan that includes funding for social services, a new homeless shelter, youth behavioral health services, and mobile medical clinics throughout the region. The council will vote on the plan on Mar. 7. (The Spokesman Review)
