Here are the top stories in Spokane today:
- The City of Spokane will honor the man who spearheaded the community effort to save Riverfront Park's clock tower decades ago. Everyone who has been to Riverfront Park will recognize the clock tower, but 50 years ago it was almost demolished. The Parks and Rec department said the tower stands today as a monument to the railroad industry's importance to the establishment and growth of Spokane. All community members are welcome to attend. - Last month, the FBI reported there were 7,759 national hate crimes in 2020, the highest level since 2008. As hate crimes continue to reach historic records nationally, Spokane's community engagement has risen as well. Local numbers are down in recent years, but activists and communities of color are still concerned about hate incidents that are not reported. That's why Spokane organizations want to engage with the community to ensure more incidents are reported. (The Spokesman Review)
- Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center and Holy Family Hospital Chief Medical Officer Dr. Dan Getz held a press conference about current COVID-19 trends on Thursday. Getz said many of the patients at Providence in the ICUs were younger patients that require hospitalizations and those who were not vaccinated, despite being eligible. (KREM.com)
- Spokane Police say they have arrested a man and charged him with First Degree Assault for viciously attacking a woman in Spokane on Tuesday. Loved ones have now created an online fundraiser for the woman who was attacked, who's still in the hospital, fighting for her life with significant head trauma. (KHQ Right Now)
- After 43 days in the hospital, including 21 in the ICU, a Spokane woman and her husband urge others to get vaccinated against COVID-19. (KHQ Right Now)
