The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Spokane.

Morning, neighbors! Sean Peek here with a fresh issue of the Spokane Daily.

First, today's weather:

On-and-off snow, 3-6". High: 35 Low: 33.

Here are the top three stories in Spokane today:

  1. Councilwoman Pam Haley has been elected as mayor of Spokane Valley. Haley, a small business owner and a council member since 2016, won by a majority vote against former Valley Mayor Ben Wick. Serving as deputy mayor will be Councilmember Rod Higgins. (KREM)
  2. Thanks to the federally and state-funded Community Eligibility Program, students will eat for free at six West Valley schools for the next four years. Millwood Kindergarten Center, Orchard Center Elementary, Seth Woodard Elementary, Ness Elementary, Spokane Valley High School, and Dishman Hills High School are all in the Community Eligibility Program. For students at those schools, families will only be asked to fill out a simple survey that is sent home at the beginning of the year, and then they can line up each day to receive free breakfast and lunch. (The Spokesman-Review)
  3. No Drought Brewing Co. has opened a neighborhood brewery in Spokane Valley. Located at 10604 E. 16th Ave., owners Damon Netz and Magen Potter-Netz spent several months renovating space to make way for the brewery in the 4,200-square-foot building shared with Northwest Pizza Co. A grand opening celebration will be hosted at the brewery on Jan. 29 from noon-9 p.m. (The Spokesman Review)
