🌱 Rally To Remove Statue + GU Garden Teaches Sustainability
Your five-minute guide to what's happening around town today.
Good day, people of Spokane! It's me again, Sean Peek, your host of the Spokane Daily.
First, today's weather:
Cooler with occasional rain. High: 55 Low: 44.
Here are the top stories today in Spokane:
- Around 40 people gathered at the base of the Riverfront Clocktower Saturday morning for a rally to demand for the removal of the John R. Monaghan statue, located in downtown Spokane on Monroe Avenue. The rally was organized by the Citizens' Advisory Council (CAC) in partnership with the Pacific Islander Community Association of Washington (PICA-WA) as a way to unite the voices of people from different backgrounds who all believe that the statue should be removed. Those standing in solidarity with the Pacific Islander community criticized the statue for no longer representing the values of the city, and the emotional harm that the statue has caused to the Pacific Islander community here in Spokane. - The Gonzaga University Campus Garden on East Boone-Sharp Alley has been teaching Zags how to grow their own food and providing fresh produce to students since 2015. Since the garden is for the students, Zags are able to visit the garden to pick their own fruits, vegetables and herbs. The purpose of the garden as a whole is multifaceted. It's at GU to educate students on where food comes from and also gives students who could be facing food insecurity on campus fresh produce to supplement their diet. (Bulletin)
- To help speed up the community's pandemic recovery, Mayor Nadine Woodward and the City Council will host a series of drop-in-style open houses to discuss ideas on how to use the latest round of American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) relief funding. (KXLY Spokane)
- Data recently released by the Washington State Liquor and Cannabis Board shows $163.7 million in recreational cannabis retail sales at stores in Spokane County between July 1, 2020, and June 30, 2021, up from the previous year's total of $135 million in sales. (Spokane Journal of Business)
- Gonzaga University received $49 million overall in cash and pledges during its most recent fiscal year, says Jeff Geldien, assistant vice principal of academic development. (Spokane Journal of Business)
