Wedding Crashers Took Selfie, Then Took Gifts: Police

SPOKANE VALLEY, WA — Two wedding crashers allegedly ripped off gifts and cards from a Spokane Valley reception in early August and left photographic evidence. The two thieves made use of a "selfie station" set up at the reception, and the bride and groom later discovered their photo. The newlyweds put the photo on social media asking for help identifying the the suspects, which led police to arrest them.

The two suspects, Joshua L. Davies, 35, and Sierra M. Davies, 25, were arrested Thursday on charges of first-degree theft and possession of a controlled substance. The idea to crash the wedding, Sierra Davies allegedly told police, came from the movie "Wedding Crashers."

"She explained they had watched the movie 'Wedding Crashers' and thought it would be funny to do," Spokane Valley police wrote in a press release. "Explaining they were hungry and didn’t have money, they signed in, had their photo taken and ate at the taco bar. During the interview, she admitted they took the cards/gifts box and a spice jar."

The wedding-crash happened on Aug. 6 at the Mirabeau Park Hotel. The bride and groom accidentally came across the crashers while scrolling through photos from the selfie station. Acting on a tip about the Davies, a Spokane Valley detective was able to match drivers' license photos with the selfie, and then went to a local motel to arrest the couple.

In addition to methamphetamine and heroin, police recovered some of the wedding gifts, including eight gift cards and a couple hundred dollars in cash.
