Here are the top three stories today in Spokane:
- A Spokane County woman died of the flu, marking the first flu-related death in the county this season. Until now, there had been four other people who were hospitalized with the flu, and three other deaths had been reported in other parts of Washington. Health Officer Dr. Francisco Velazquz stated the "best chance at protecting yourself and others is to get the flu vaccine." (KXLY)
- On Monday night, crews rescued a man and woman from the Spokane River. Investigators had received a call from a man who said he was "stuck" in the Spokane River near the TJ Meenoch Bridge; however, there was no answer when crews tried to call him back. The two started a fire on an island which helped rescuers to locate the victims, who were cold and wet, but otherwise okay. (KXLY)
- A student was hit by a car on Tuesday afternoon while in a crosswalk near Franklin Elementary. The driver who hit the student was cooperative with police and was cited for failure to yield at a crosswalk in a school zone. The student was transported to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and is expected to be okay. (KREM)
