Curtis Grad Andrea Geubelle Nabs Triple Jump Crown in Big 12 Championships

The University Place native's overall mark of 44-07 feet was a University of Kansas record and an NCAA best this season. She also earned an automatic bid to the NCAA championships.

COLLEGE STATION, TX-Andrea Geubelle jumped her way into the record book Saturday.

The University Place native and Kansas Jayhawk put on a show in the Big 12 Indoor Championships, decisively winning the triple jump to capture her first conference crown and earning second in the long jump.

On her third triple jump attempt of the day, the junior jumped to a school-record and NCAA-best mark of 44-07 feet.

This came after jumps of more than 43 feet and 43-08 feet, which were already good enough to earn her an automatic qualification into the NCAA Championships. She didn't even have to take her final three attempts.

“On that third jump I really put it all out there with no fear and just hoped for the best,” the All-American told the University of Kansas athletics website following her victory. “It really didn’t look that far but when I looked at (horizontal jumps coach Wayne) Pate, he seemed pretty happy with it so I knew it had to be a good one.”

Her third jump was ranked third among all athletes in the NCAA this year.

Geubelle also was the runner-up in the long jump at 20-3.5 feet, behind fellow Jayhawk and winner Francine Simpson (20-7.75 feet).

According to the university, Geubelle earned 18 points of the Jayhawks' total, which was the most on the team and the third-most by any athlete at the Big 12 meet. The 18 points also ranks as the third-most earned by a KU woman at a Big 12 Indoor meet.

Anyone who followed Geubelle during her days at Curtis knows that shattering records is nothing new to her. The three-time Washington state champion in the long jump and triple jump holds the state triple jump record (42-10.25 feet).
