E-MAIL TO THE EDITOR: Talk Time at the Library Is Picking Up Speed

Program helps non-native English speakers work on their conversation skills.

(Editor's note: I received this letter from Karen Pease, Talk Time Program Director for the University Place Library)

It has been a crazy few weeks with traveling and workload. I just wanted to share an update that the University Place Library program is moving full-steam ahead! We are continuing to meet every Saturday morning (except over the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays) from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the University Place Library.

Last week, we had six students and six volunteers, so students were able to
converse with a native English speaker one on one. A few students came up to me afterward and told me how thankful they were for the opportunity because it was the best English practice they had experienced.

Our time is simple: Show up at 10 a.m., get welcomed, pair off with a  partner or two, and chat with each other in English for an hour. We provide topic sheets each week to help get things started, but each group is welcome to talk about their own interests as they wish.

Last Saturday, we discussed the topic of "Asking for Help," and gave the  students some ESL and other resources available to them within Pierce  County.

We are so thankful to be meeting a need in our community, and hope that  many more students and volunteers will discover the fun of Talk Time right in their own backyard.

As always, if you know of anyone who is interested, they are welcome to  come to the library on Saturday at 10 a.m., or e-mail me for more  information at universityplaceesl@gmail.com.  We can also be found on  Facebook at Up English.

Thanks!
Karen Pease
