Eight high school students attending Charles Wright Academy's Upper School are moving onto the state level of competition after finishing fourth or above in their respective categories at the regional level of National History Day.
The South Puget Sound Regional History Day competition was held March 27 at Green River Community College in Auburn and hosted high school students from Pierce, Thurston, and South King counties. “This was the toughest competition I have seen to date,” said Upper School history teacher Nick Coddington. “All [of these students] have a real shot at state.” The state competition will be held at Green River Community College on May 3. Charles Wright Upper School students advancing to the state level are:
Paper:- Jackie Yeh ’16, first place for “Hanford Nuclear Site—National Rights and Responsibilities”
- Miranda Ferguson ’16, second place for “China’s One-Child Policy—Balancing Individual Rights with National Responsibility”
Group Website:- Taylor Walsh ’15 and Kaylee Kim ’16, first place for “The Clemons Tree Farm: Cultivating Responsibility in Reforestation”
Individual Website:- Alli Knowles ’17, fourth place for “Women’s Rights and Society’s Responsibility”
Group Documentary:- Davin McKinley ’17 and Thea Lucas of Olympia High School, first place for Refusing to Ignore Human Rights—Denmark and Its Legacy of Social Responsibility
Individual Documentary:- Sean O'Farrell ’17, third place for Rights and Responsibilities: Disaster Relief and the US Military
Individual Exhibit:- Kiana Taghavi ’17, fourth place for “The Evian Conference—A Failure of International Responsibility”
The winners of the state competition will then advance to the national competition in Washington, D.C., in June.
