Enjoy The Snow ... On The Mountains

Patch's expert on the offerings of the city's parks and recreation department offers tips and advice on what residents could enjoy.

Skiing

Skiing this year at Crystal has been great.  This past Friday was one of those days to die for, with fresh powder, blue skies, and cold weather that kept the snow fresh and soft.  Now is the time to check out the clothing, get the skies out of storage, and make your plans.  If you are having your children take lessons, get them signed up with the recreation department.  There are still some openings for the ski school at the Summit.  Nothing can beat kids learning to ski properly in a ski school and learning the proper way.  This learning can last them a lifetime.

Daddy Daughter Dance

Youth Council is already planning this event in February.  Might be time for a special Christmas present (a dress, perhaps?) for your daughter for this dance!  It is a great one if you dads haven't had the privilege yet of taking your daughters to one.  They are very special.

Senior/Community Center

There are some great new free health and fitness opportunities for area seniors staring in January but you need to get registered now if you plan to attend. Tai Chi starts Jan. 12.  A time-honored method that focuses on gently opening the joints, increasing stability and flexibility while enhancing muscle strength.

Max Meditation classes begin on Jan. 14.  This, too, is free for seniors 61 or older.  564-1992 will get you registered.

Parks And Recreation Commission

Last Thursday was the final meeting of the year of this UP Council-appointed commission.

Its role is to advise the City Council on various parks and recreation issues, including capital improvement projects, land acquisitions, and park development and recreation programs.  I have had the honor of being on this commission the past year.  With no capital funds available and a vastly reduced parks and recreation operating budget the city was still able to provide the same level of Recreation Activities in 2010 as they provided in 2009.  The upkeep of the parks was also maintained.  We on the PARC felt that all of this was achieved by the skill, knowledge, and dedication of the entire parks and recreation staff.  Without their effort the year would have been very different.  All UP Citizens should be proud of the accomplishments of this group of men and women that kept everything running this past year.

I would be remiss to not mention the fact that many of the residents of University Place and surrounding area also stepped up with cash donations, sponsorship of youth teams, in kind donations by area businesses and more volunteers in all of the various programs and activities that parks and recreation provided in 2010.  Our hats are off to all.

In 2011 we hope to do even better providing more events, programs, and fund raisers.
