ESPN Deportes To Bring Latino Flair To University Place Festival

Organizers have announced that one of the event’s sponsors is ESPN Deportes, which hosts a quartet of Spanish-language, AM-radio stations in the Puget Sound area. In Tacoma, listeners tune in to 1480 AM.

As part of its sponsorship, ESPN Deportes will be infusing some cultural flair into UP Fest on Aug. 6, including Latino cultural music and dancing, a soccer clinic and a kids talent show.

Organizers say ESPN Deportes adds a cultural element to the celebration that recognizes the presence and contribution of Latinos in University Place, as well as the greater Puget Sound area.

“University Place encourages diversity in its cityhood vision of an evolving community,” said City Councilwoman Denise McCluskey, . “This is further reflected at Chambers Bay and Curtis High School as they open their fields to a diversity of ethnic uses for all cultures to enjoy sports.”

She added: “This culturally oriented event is an natural offspring in which all festival attendees will enjoy plus embrace the unique traditions of our community and surrounding regions. In the end, we hope that our city's birthday celebration will spark an interest and understanding of other cultures.“

The radio station will broadcast live from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., at the event at .

Also, the radio station will be providing a free soccer clinic from 2 p.m to 5 p.m., for children and teens between 8 years old and 16 years old.

Other Latino-oriented events throughout the day include music with DJ Garifuna, a Mexician folkloric group and a kids talent show.

“They seem to be a natural fit for this outdoor event,” McCluskey said.
