Pierce County deputy Deputy Daniel McCartney died early Monday morning after being shot responding to a burglary call.

UNIVERSITY PLACE, WA - There are several ways for local residents to donate to a legacy fund for Pierce County deputy Daniel A. McCarthy, who died after being shot in the line of duty late Sunday night. McCartney, 34, a husband and father of three young boys, had served as a Pierce County deputy since 2014.

If you want to donate to McCartney's legacy fund, here's how:

McCartney was shot around 11:30 p.m. Sunday and later died at St. Joseph's Hospital in Tacoma during surgery. According to Pierce County Sheriff's spokesman Det. Ed Troyer, McCartney may have engaged in a gun battle with two suspects before he was shot.
