Piece Of World Trade Center Comes To University Place On Saturday

A crew from West Pierce Fire & Rescue drove to New York to retrieve a steel beam that was part of the Twin Towers. The piece will be on display between 11 a.m. to noon. A public dedication ceremony is scheduled for 6 p.m., Oct. 18.

A volunteer crew will bring a steel beam that once helped hold up the World Trade to University Place on Saturday.

As Patch reported earlier this month, a group of five West Pierce firefighters volunteered to make the cross-country trek to New York to obtain the piece. Their trip coincided with another group of West Pierce firefighters riding their motorcycles to commemorate the Sept. 11 attacks.

On Saturday, the group will arrive pulling a trailer with the piece on display between 11 a.m. and noon. Lakewood Police will escort the firefighters from Interstate 5 down Bridgeport Way, where University Place Police will continue the escort to West Pierce Station 31 at 3631 Drexler Drive West.

The piece will be stored until the dedication ceremony, scheduled for 6 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 18, also at Station 31. The public is invited to attend the ceremony.

Earlier this year, Gig Harbor Fire brought home a piece of the Twin Towers. It's part of an effort to give pieces of the fallen building to fire departments across the county.
