University Place Police Officer, Citizen Recognized for Kindness in Action

Sometimes, it’s the smallest gesture—like taking someone’s hand—that makes all the difference.

Recently, a University Place citizen and police officer were both honored for helping an elderly woman get home safely, after she was found wandering her apartment complex, lost.

“This is just another example of the investment our citizens have in our community,” said UP Police Chief Mike Blair during the July 15 city council meeting.

Blair said that UP resident, Philip Tompson, saw the woman in distress and called 9-1-1. He stayed with her until a police officer arrived.

UP Police Deputy Jason Smith responded to the call, took the woman’s hand and walked her back to her apartment. Tompson captured the photo of them walking away and sent it to the department as an example of outstanding community service.

Both Tompson and Smith received certificates of appreciation for their kindness and a standing ovation from the University Place city council and citizens.

“Mr. Tompson showed courage for getting involved—he made a difference in her life,” said Blair. “The Deputy showed compassion—he is an outstanding example of the kind of person who wears our badge.”
