Take Note of What's Around and Above You, West Pierce Warns

The death of an ATVer in King County serves as a reminder, officials say, to take note of your surroundings, especially around trees.

The ice storm that is causing havoc for Western Washington has taken a tragic turn.

KOMO reports that a man in his 60's from the King County community of Mirrormont died today when a tree fell on him as he was about to ride on his all-terrain vehicle.

Communities throughout the region are reporting down tree limbs and power lines as the ice storm that followed Wednesday's snowfall continues to leave residents struggling.

In University Place and Lakewood, residents have lost power because of ice and trees. Even though the community might not be as wooded as other parts of Pierce County, West Pierce Fire & Rescue spokeswoman Hallie McCurdy advises residents to stay aware of their surroundings.

“Due to the dangers of falling trees, branches and power lines, please be very cautious when going outside," she said. "Be sure to take note of what’s around you and above you.”
