West Nile virus found in Walla Walla County, health department says (nbcrightnow.com) — Health officials have confirmed Walla Walla County's first West Nile virus case of 2026, with the patient recovering after likely being bitten by local mosquitoes. Residents are urged to protect themselves by using repellent, limiting dusk-to-dawn exposure, eliminating standing water, and keeping window and door screens in good repair.
2. Walla Walla Catholic Schools to break ground on new elementary school (tri-cityherald.com) — Walla Walla Catholic Schools will break ground Oct. 2 on a new $8.8 million Assumption Grade School building at the DeSales High School campus, consolidating pre-K through 12th grade in one location. Residents are invited to the 3 p.m. groundbreaking and blessing, which flows right into the community SausageFest fundraiser with food, games, music and football.
3. Woodinville winemaker acquires Walla Walla winery (tricitiesbusinessnews.com) — A well-known Walla Walla winery, Gramercy Cellars, has been acquired by Woodinville-based Avennia but will keep its name and winemaking approach. For local wine fans, that means Gramercy's Walla Walla roots, vineyards and style remain in place, now backed by additional resources to grow the brand.
4. Trump endorses congressman, attacks Washington state income tax (chronline.com) — A congressional race touching Walla Walla is heating up as President Trump reiterates his endorsement of Rep. Michael Baumgartner while attacking Democrat Carmela Conroy over Washington's income tax on high earners. Baumgartner, heading to a debate in Walla Walla, echoed Trump's criticism of the tax, while Conroy used the attention to rally donations, signaling a competitive Eastern Washington contest.
