Are Profiteers Setting Education Policy?

As the Common Core Curriculum movement began to gain momentum, I was struck by the fact that much of the support was coming from big national companies that published textbooks and standardized tests.  They stood to gain quite a bit of additional business, if the nation adopted a “common core curriculum”.

A recent meeting in New York City of potential investors in educational products and services tends to reinforce my concern that there is clearly a conflict of interest behind this movement.

And now Lauren Helpler writes in the Silicon Valley Business Journal, “The potential for superprofits has (Silicon) Valley heads spinning.”  She goes on to point out that “the market for education is massive. She says the $1.5 trillion US education industry accounts for roughly 10 percent of the U.S. Gross Domestic Product….”

The fundamental question here is, “Are we going to allow profiteers to set local, state, and national education policy, merely because it improves their bottom line?”
