Dollars & Sense: No Future for Woodinville?
Now or never for a vision of Woodinville's future?

I stand withΒ my look-a-likeΒ grandson Cole, and wonder ifΒ the next generation to live, work and play in Woodinville may not get the chance.
The city of Woodinville recently lost 30% of its primary revenue source due to the state's reallocation of local sales taxes. That leaves a shortfall in the years ahead to cover theΒ basic services citizens expect from the city. ItΒ also cripples theΒ ability to promote local business, build tourism andΒ attract outside investments.
Look at whatΒ Duvall has done. They turnedΒ tensΒ ofΒ thousands of city money to hundreds of thousands ofΒ county and federal funds that has revitalizedΒ their main streetΒ boostingΒ local business, attracting visitors and bringing revenues to their city (which is nowΒ nearly the population of Woodinville).

Bothell is transformingΒ intoΒ a waterfront community. They leveragedΒ $150 million of publicΒ funds into $650 million of private investment. City leadersΒ actually promotedΒ their long-termΒ planΒ to big money partners who shared their vision. Bothell is more than twice the size of Woodinville, and their plan might somedayΒ soonΒ makeΒ themΒ five timesΒ our size and strength.
Woodinville needsΒ a singular vision, a specificΒ plan,Β an allianceΒ with county andΒ federal officials, and a partnership with investors who supportΒ our vision.Β This startsΒ with anΒ openness to newΒ ideas, new strategies,Β new neighbors,Β and new investors.Β It begins with respect and appreciation to those who have come before, have businesses here now, and who will fuel our future. Woodinville should beΒ openΒ for business, and open to business. Shop local, promote local, grow local.

I hope Cole gets to live, work and play here. You no doubt know a Cole, too.
OurΒ reputation of beingΒ aloof and contentious needs an immediate transfusion of friendliness,Β else thereΒ isΒ no future here. The next generation willΒ prefer toΒ live inΒ Duvall, work inΒ Bothell and play inΒ Kirkland.Β
What's your vision for 2020? Where doΒ you see us in just eight years? The only engine we have is local business, but toΒ what purpose and in what direction?
