Flag Day is this Thursday

Do you have a flag? Do you know the Flag Code? Do you know of a Boy Scout Troop that can retire an old faded/torn flag for me?

Flag Day is this Thursday.Β  Do you have a flag?Β  You can pick up a flag set which includes a pole to mount on your house for about $15 at Target, TOPS, and other local stores.Β  Flag Day started in 1916 to commemorate the adoption of the US flag in 1777.

Many people will fly flags on their houses starting on Memorial Day and going till Labor Day.Β  It is important to note the Flag Code.Β  The flag should be illuminated at night (keep your porch light on).Β  The flag should never touch the ground.Β  Be aware of this if you are in charge of a group of kids that will be carrying different flags for a parade – have the tallest child carry the American flag.Β  When you are watching a parade and the US Flag passes by, be sure to remove your hat and place your hand over your heart (do this for the national anthem also).Β  If you are in charge of setting a stage for a presentation, place the US flag to the right of the speaker (which is the audience’s left).

These are just some basics.Β  There are also standards of respect, the correct way to fold the flag, and codes about mourning (flying at half staff).

Any Boy Scout troops out there?Β  I have a flag that needs to be retired.Β  Does anyone know of any troops that conduct this service/ceremony?Β  How about a local American Legion?Β  Does anyone have any contacts for me?
