March 20th Backfire Moto Update
Backfire Moto bike night in Ballard has unofficial opening before the official event next month. Check out what it's about and get ready for spring on your motorcycle! http://www.backfiremoto.com/
March 20th turned about to be the unofficial first BackfireMotoΒ event that I attended this year.Β
If you visit the website it tells you that it's every third Wednesday "and yes we try to keep it year around." Myself and three friends, all motorcycle riders and enthusiasts made plans a month ago to attend and ride down. We scanned weather forecasts every hour and were elated when the sun came out mid-day and seemed to be staying. As we rejoiced to this welcome change in weather to our favor, something else came to mind. It was sunny but it was pretty cold too.
The end of our evening was also to end inΒ SnoqualmieΒ for some pizzaΒ andΒ beverages that go well with with pizza. Plus someone in our group had a web special so we knew that at the end of our evening, that riding back would not only be cold as forecast, rain might also add to a chilly ride and only one in the group had the proper gear. (And heated at that! He also had five steeds to choose from, jerk! Though I would easily be a jerk like that if I could. I would also go for trying to have 10 bikes)

When we allΒ droveΒ together in a car we arrived in Ballard at about a quarter to 6. Hilliards brewery was still closed and seemed very empty. Jason, who drove us, was with me last October when I came to my first event last year. We had entered Hilliard"s and had a single beer each. We wanted to try again but it wouldn't work this time. We didn't stay long enough to see if they ever opened. We would find out later by two of the apparent organizers that the "Spring Opener" was moved to the third Wednesday in April. No worries there was still a nice set of bikes to peruse, drool over or chuckle at. We were even able to get the new t-shirts that hadn't even been posted on the site yet. So we felt like we had an "in" with some of the event's organizers.Β
Though the invitation is primarily cafe racers, all two-wheeled forms of transport are quite welcome. And no one seems to look down on what you ride here, which isn't always true of all motorcycle events. All the bike owners we found were approachable. They would answer questions about their bike, offered knowledge and shared resources that might help with your bike. I was given info on powdercoaters in the area as I want to have my Suzuki GN400 frame refreshed in black.
