Travel the World Through Your Mailbox

Kids out of school? Want them to learn more about the world? Why not try Postcrossing?

Β

I have been a Postcrosser for two years now and have sent and received almost 200 postcards to over 40 different countries.

Postcrossers are great. You get to say in your profile what types of cards you are interested in, and your fellow Postcrossers do their best to find something for you in their country.Β  If you are learning a language, you can even request them to write a message for you in that language. My son is learning German and we have received several postcards written German that he has been able to read.Β

And the best thing? It's cheap! Well, sorta. You have to buy the stamps - $1.05 international and 32 cents domestic. And yes, you have to buy the postcards, but that is the best part. When you are at a tourist spot, it's fun to pick up extra cards and try to guess what people are going to like. Yes, there is even a "favorites" feature on the Postcrossing website where people can upload your postcard and others can "favorite" it. The postcard that I sent out that received the most favorites? Mt. St. Helens. Many people around the world still remember it when she blew her top and they love that picture.

There is even a postcard collector's show this weekend in Kent for you to pick up some unique cards to get started. Check out www.postcrossing.org for more information or send a question to me via the comments section below.
