"Espalier," training trees in 2 dimensional forms, is an ancient art often used for growing fruit trees because it increases fruit quality, saves garden space, reduces maintenance time and is also beautiful. In this 2- 1/2 hour beginner's class you will, in the first hour, learn how different types of fruit trees grow and fruit and the basics of good pruning.
With this knowledge, you will then be equipped to learn, in the 1- 1/2 hour following, how to select the growing form that is right for you and your new fruit trees and how to get them off to a healthy start with good placement, pruning, training and ongoing care.
Instructor, Ingela Wanerstrand, is owner of Green Darner Garden Design, specializing in edible landscapes, and has more than 15 years experience professionally pruning fruit trees.
Warnerstrand will be focusing mostly on espalier forms and demonstrating on live trees. You are welcome to skip the first hour if you already know the basics. Class will be outside the entire time so you will want to dress for fickle Spring weather.
