Hidden Gems: Eastside Mother’s Club

EMC is committed to helping you find your Tribe.

Being a mom around here is tough. Many of us are from somewhere else and are kinda orphans out here in the Pacific Northwest. Or we’re from here and have spent our entire adult lives working and not making mom friends. It’s a rude awakening to have a baby and realize just how lonely being a mom can be. I recall wandering the aisles of Target with my little baby just hoping to bump into a mom who I could connect with. It never happened. It took me six months and some disastrous meetup.com experiences before I finally stumbled upon an ad for Eastside Mother’s Club in a local newspaper.

Eastside Mother’s Group, or EMC, has been around since the mid-80s and is a for-moms-by-moms group. There is no affiliation with any organization, religious or otherwise, so the group truly focuses on addressing the needs of the Eastside Mom. The best part? There is always something to do for moms and kids each week.

Every month, EMC hosts a Mom’s Morning Break in Kirkland with an informative guest speaker for the moms, on-site childcare for the kids complete with coffee and brunch-style treats. It’s a great way to learn something new, see the same faces each month and allow your child the chance to test the waters of drop-off care.

EMC also has a variety of mom-only and with-kiddos activities like Book Club (my favorite kid-free event), Craft Club and Cooking Club and the ladies of EMC also will help you plug into a playgroup to help you make super-fast friends for yourself and your child.

My absolute favorite thing about EMC is the field trips. Part of the $40 yearly fee goes to funding many, many outings throughout the year. They go to Remlinger Farms, host amazingly crafty community-minded holiday parties for Halloween, Easter and Christmas, schedule farm tours, museum dates, bounce houses, Bubble Man…all those great things I would never think to do by myself.

There is really nothing better than to go to an event and see a friendly face. Membership is small, under 100 local families, so you can really get to know your neighbors and find the type of activities that interest you and your child.

EMC introduced me to best friends. EMC got me out of the house and into my community. If you are looking for a well-run, active group on Moms committed to enriching our children’s lives and supporting each other as friends and fellow moms, then go join EMC.

See you at the Easter Egg Hunt on the 21st!
