I-405 Shoulder Lanes Now Open For Drivers
The shoulder along I-405 near Woodinville will now be open to drivers during peak commute times.
WOODINVILLE, WA - Driving I-405 during rush hour just got a lot easier ... maybe. At 2 p.m. Monday, the Washington state Department of Transportation flipped a switch and turned on signs that will allow drivers to use the shoulder for driving along a particularly nasty stretch of highway.
During peak times, drivers headed north between SR 527 and the I-5 interchange near Lynnwood will get to use the new shoulder lanes. The shoulder lanes were originally supposed to open in 2018, but WSDOT was able to use toll revenue from the new-ish express lanes to move up the opening date.
For now, the shoulder lanes will only be open during the afternoon commute. When the lane is open, there will be a sign with a green arrow indicating that you can use it.

The new lanes opened with little fanfare on Monday - it looked like WSDOT literally just flipped a switch and, voila!
