Waste Management Debuts Recycling Video Series

The videos are an effort to increase food and paper recycling rather than sending those items to the landfill.

Waste Management this week debuted a four-part series of online recycling public service announcements explain all the things that should be recycled rather than go to the landfill.

The videos are intended to encourage recycling at home by promoting a family effort to recycle food scraps and other valuable materials.

Β β€œRecycling awareness is really important to Waste Management and for the communities we serve,” said Robin Freedman, with Waste Management. β€œA study by King County showed that more than half of the β€˜stuff’ we throw away each year could have been recycled, composted, or reused.”

Before you put a banana peel in the garbage or before your kids forget to recycle their homework Waste Management wants you to watch Waste Management Joe on his quest to encourage families to recycle better, one therapy session at a time.

β€œWe set out to approach recycling education in a fun and unique way with these videos,” said Freedman. β€œWe know that residents trust and like their drivers so we created β€˜Waste Management Joe’ to help educate families about the importance of recycling and give them the information they need to make recycling part of their everyday routine.”

By continuing to recycle residents can help keep valuable items like glass, plastic and food scraps out of the landfill - more than half of what is thrown away each year could have been recycled or reused.Β While most Puget Sound residents are adept at recycling, there are still more opportunities to recycle-in the home and at the office, according to Freedman.

The video series will be available on Waste Management’s YouTube channel starting Dec. 5 with Episode One, β€œJimmy.” The rest of the videos will premiere Dec. 12, 19, 26.

In addition to the information in the videos – Waste Management has more tips on how to achieve β€œzero waste” at home:

  • Knowing what’s in your trash that can be recycled is the first step toward more effective recycling.
  • Make recycling a family affair. Talk about what can and can’t be recycled.
  • Post recycling guidelines in a prominent area for easy reference.
  • Avoid the temptation to toss out hard-to-clean containers. Use a spatula to remove remaining food waste from recyclable containers.
