You might think black bears would be hibernating by now, but they go through several stages before settling down for the winter. During fall, bears enter a phase called hyperphagia, which is a period of extreme binge eating to fatten up before winter. Then, bears go through a transition period where they sleep up to 22 hours per day in preparation or full hibernation, according to the North American Bear Center.

Hibernation also varies by region, according to the state Department of Fish and Wildlife. Black bears that live along the Pacific Coast don't typically go into hibernation during winter, for example.
