WSP Trooper Dives Into Sammamish River To Save Suicidal Man

The incident happened Wednesday along SR 202, according to Washington State Patrol.

WOODINVILLE, WA - A Washington State Patrol trooper jumped into the Sammamish River this week to rescue a man experiencing a crisis. The incident happened Wednesday evening along SR 202 in Woodinville in the heart of wine country.

Near 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Trooper Kevin Thomson responded to SR 202 west of Redmond-Woodinville Road on a report of a man trying to get into passing cars. Thomson approached the man and began guiding him out of the roadway.

Suddenly, the man took off running and jumped into the Sammamish River, falling about 30 feet into the water. Thomson followed, running down an embankment and entering the river. Thomson pulled the man to the shore.

The man had sustained a gash to the head during the ordeal, and Thomson gave him first aid until paramedics arrived. The man, a 20-year-old from Lynnwood, was taken to Harborview for treatment, including a mental health evaluation.
